What is the TDBoK Guide?
The TDBoK GuideTM: Talent Development Body of Knowledge, second edition, is a comprehensive collection of talent development concepts, definitions, methodologies, and examples that lays the foundation and guiding principles for those who develop talent in the workplace.
What is the difference between the Talent Development Capability Model and the TDBoK Guide?
The Talent Development Capability Model™ is a framework to guide the TD profession in what practitioners must know and do to develop themselves, others, and their organizations. The Capability Model is the foundation for the ATD Certification Institute’s certification programs, the Associate Professional in Talent Development (APTD®) and the Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD®).
Mirroring the Capability Model, the TDBoK Guide features three sections, one for each domain of practice in the model. The TDBoK Guide explores the Capability Model’s 23 capability areas in depth, giving you detailed insight into the concepts, models, and terminology you must know to achieve excellence in your talent development practice. Professionals can use the TDBoK Guide to learn key concepts, gain exposure to the full breadth of our field, and speak the common language of a network of global TD practitioners.
How was the TDBoK Guide created and vetted?
To create the first edition of the TDBoK Guide—published as the Talent Development Body of Knowledge (TDBoK)—ATD collaborated with expert practitioners from the field, focusing on societal trends affecting the profession, emerging topics in talent development, and updating existing models and methods.
The TDBoK Guide also reflects the content within ATD’s Talent Development Capability Model, which is organized into three domains comprised of 23 capabilities that reflect the personal, professional, and organizational impact capabilities needed for success in the talent development field. The goal was to produce a resource that offered a deep dive into these 23 capabilities and not only reflected current standards but also set TD professionals on the right path for future success.
How does ATD decide what to include in the TDBoK Guide?
ATD’s ongoing research into the knowledge and skills talent development professionals must possess to succeed serves as the foundation of the TDBoK Guide. The publication provides definitions, explanations, and standards for each knowledge and skill statement within the Talent Development Capability Model. ATD’s foundational research is evaluated by expert practitioners to determine how to present the content and define the standard of practice for each capability area.

Who is the author of the TDBoK Guide?
The TDBoK Guide is a curated publication that reflects the perspectives of expert talent development practitioners, researchers, ATD volunteer committees, and ATD staff.
The TDBoK, first edition, was originally published in 2020 with input from more than 60 expert contributors, including guidance from the advisory group and task force that shaped the Capability Model (originally released in 2019).
To guide the development of the second edition, ATD convened a body of nine senior-level volunteer leaders, each identified for their expertise in one or more capability areas in the Talent Development Capability Model.. Twelve new subject matter experts were also invited to contribute to the development of the second edition.
What is the role of the TDBoK Guide advisory group?
To guide the development of the TDBoK Guide, second edition, ATD convened a body of nine senior-level volunteer leaders, each identified for their expertise in one or more capability areas in the Talent Development Capability Model. The advisory group identified changes and emerging topics in the talent development field and recommended changes to TDBoK Guide content to align with how practical application and talent development environments had evolved. The advisors also recommended reference material to use and expert practitioners to consider as contributors to help shape the publication. Finally, the advisory group and ATD staff used a formal mechanism to review, evaluate, and make decisions about discrepancies or other concerns within the content.
Is the Glossary of TD Terms on ATD’s website the same as the glossary in the TDBoK Guide?
Yes, the Glossary of TD Terms on td.org matches the glossary in the TDBoK Guide.
Will the TDBoK Guide be updated again, and will future editions be released?
As the talent development field continues to evolve, ATD will ensure that the TDBoK Guide also evolves to include the most relevant, accurate, and up-to-date information, along with enhanced features to make the publication easier to use. We will continue this process through planned research activities, the establishment of a permanent advisory body, a mechanism to address discrepancies, and ongoing review of user questions and feedback.
Is the TDBoK Guide available in languages besides English?
ATD offers Arabic and Chinese versions of the first edition. Arabic, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese versions of the second edition will launch in 2024.
